Excessive Sweating on the Face or Scalp
Excessive sweating that occurs on the face or scalp is known as facial hyperhidrosis. Symptoms vary. For some individuals, only their forehead, nose (particularly the sides of the nose), and chin sweat. For others, the scalp also seems to be perpetually covered with a layer of perspiration.
This form of excessive sweating is sometimes accompanied by facial blushing.
A Source of Anxiety
Because the face is the central image we portray to others, facial hyperhidrosis can be particularly embarrassing and anxiety-inducing. Women with this form of excessive sweating often wear their hair short so it will look less oily. Many also find it difficult, if not impossible, to wear makeup.
Treatments
For mild to moderate facial hyperhidrosis, the first line of treatment is usually oral anticholinergic medications, which block the chemical (acetylcholine) that is stimulating the sweat glands to overproduce. Sometimes these drugs are combined with a mild sedative.
Botox injections—yes, the same treatment used to smooth out forehead wrinkles—can also help some people. Be sure to select a physician who is very knowledgeable about facial musculature, however. If the Botox is applied incorrectly, you may experience some temporary drooping of the treated facial areas.
